Issues
There are a number of issues which are driving this campaign. The key issues are outlined below.
Pedestrian Access
Despite being a major road surrounded by residential properties and commercial premises there is no safe pedestrian access along Ferry Road.
Sooner or later someone will be injured and they will sue Kingborough Council for failing in their duty of care to provide adequate pedestrian access. Click here to read more about the lack of pedestrian access.
Sub-standard Road
Ferry Road is sub-standard for the volume of traffic including log trucks, camper vans, boat trailers etc etc competing for space on a narrow carriageway with no adequate verges or parking.
Traffic congestion caused by Bruny Island Ferry queues is a major hazard for residents and visitors alike. Click here to read more about this issue.
Pollution and Health Risks
Sewerage! This is the issue causing the biggest stink. Whilst the community is united in acknowledging the problem, there are differences of opinion on the solution. Views range between “reticulated sewerage is my birthright” to “if Ferry Road is sewered then Kettering will become the next Docklands”. Unfortunately this lack of consensus gives the authorities plenty of room to duck and weave. Meanwhile Little Oyster Cove continues to be polluted by run-off from local residential properties and businesses. Click here to read more.
Tourist Potential
The Kettering and Oyster Cove Residents Groups (KOCRES) have been lobbying Council for years for a walkway along the waterfront between the Ferry Terminal via Oyster Cove Marina to the community hub on the Channel Highway. It would be a great drawcard for tourists and help resolve the lack of safe pedestrian access along Ferry Road. Click here to read more .
Planning Restrictions
The Kettering community recognise that significant improvements in infrastructure along Ferry Road have the potential to increase sub-division and development in the area. It is essential that any improvements are backed by strong planning and zoning legislation that ensures the essential character of Kettering as a rural seaside village is retained.
